Recently, Grand Master Austin Wright Sr. gave an empowering lecture and Martial Arts Exhibition at the Young Peoples Community Foundation in Richmond, Virginia. Wright was a Key Note Guest Speaker and personally invited by Mother Avis Royal, who is the Founder and the Director of the Program. Other guest speakers included Miss Chelsea Duncan, Assistant Dean from The University of Virginia, who spoke about Scholarships and Grants and the requirements of those who can qualify.
Mother Avis focused on Character Building. The mission and goal of this program is to offer a positive alternative to keep kids off of drugs and prevention of community crimes. Ms. Avis Royal established this Foundation in 1998 to help at risk kids in the community (www.ypcf.org).
The Children’s Theme for the Awards Day was “I can be what I want to be, because I’m a child of Integrity”. Mother Avis quoted that, “Integrity is doing the right thing even when no one is looking”. This is the model we must follow. Wright agreed and used the Martial Arts Philosophy to develop self-discipline and self-control to defend your Emotions, Mind, Body, Spirit and Soul from the start. Wright says, we are under attack by the enemy and we must have faith, a strong spirit to protect ourselves and be a leader. He talked about having the power to say No! when tempted by drugs and peer pressure. Also, early prevention is key and kids need strategies to thwart the lure.
